Listening Is Your New Super Power

"Sometimes...We Should Shut Up"

It is hard to listen AND talk at the same time….some would even say impossible. Many high performers and skilled individuals love to talk.

Talking is how we communicate. It’s how we express emotions during competition. It’s how we justify ourselves. It’s how we brag, jaw at opponents…and the list goes on.

Our words are heavier than we think….

The mistake, however, comes from not knowing when to shut up. If you do not listen, you cannot grow. Listening is one of the primary requirements for growth. This is especially true when you are around a Coach, a Veteran, or a Master of their craft. When you around these individuals, the only thing you should be doing (in regards to speaking), is asking questions.

The best interviewers, podcasters, and journalists in the world ask the best questions….and then they shut their mouths.

Oprah Winfrey and Phil Donahue made massive fortunes by way of ‘listening’

As a performance psychology specialist, I deal with many high level performers. I kid you not when I say that the majority of time I spend with clients is spent LISTENING. Sometimes 90% or more of a session can be spent by just listening!

Michael Jordan was an avid listener when he competed in the NBA

A mentor of mine told me long ago, “Josiah, a listening ear has a healing quality”. the Bible even tells us to be slow to anger, slow to speak, and quick to listen (James 1:19-20):

“So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;  for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.”

Remember This Going Forward:

  • Listening is how we show respect

  • Listening is NOT the same as ‘hearing’

  • Listening requires comprehension

  • People flock towards listeners and run away from blabbers

  • Listening builds massive trust

  • Listening is a skill…you must practice

  • Listening + Comprehension = High Intelligence

  • Listening + Action = Wisdom
