The Power Of Rhythms

If you think about it,  you’ll find out quickly that many processes, events, and routines are established using rhythms.

What is a rhythm?

I am really big on definitions because if you don’t understand definitions, you can’t understand concepts, and when you don’t understand concepts, you cannot talk about big picture items. So here it is:

Rhythm: a strong, regular, repeated pattern of movement or sound….I would also add: actions, responses & behaviors

Rhythms allow you to build. Rhythms bring consistency. Rhythms strengthen predictability. Rhythms become stronger over the course of time.

The sun and moon follow rhythm.

Our heartbeat has a rhythm.

Our breathing follows a rhythm.

Our sleep patterns follow a rhythm.

And here’s the thing… If the rhythm is strong enough, other events, people, etc. begin to align themselves accordingly.

For example, the marketplace has a rhythm: it’s typically Monday through Friday, from about 9 AM to 5 PM

Church-goers follow a rhythm: typically, Sunday mornings, with some people attending evening services on Sundays, and a midweek service of some type if they are able.

The NFL typically has games on Sundays (this is a particularly strong rhythm within the world of sports).

… you get the point.

Rhythms allow you to build. Rhythms bring consistency. Rhythms strengthen predictability. Rhythms become stronger over the course of time.

What are the rhythms in your life?

Are your rhythms sporadic?

Are your rhythms consistent?

Are your rhythms healthy?

Can other people and processes depend on your rhythm and cadence?

Let’s commit to creating strong rhythms in our lives in the coming year.
